One thing that is awesome about erotica (and romances in general) is the fact that the sky’s the limit when it comes to story lines. There are as many genre in erotica as there are genres in mainstream fiction. But, unlike mainstream fiction, all these genres are in one happy, shiny, horny place. Don’t even get me started on the mixing of genres. Looking for a May-December romance between shape shifters in outer space? There’s probably a book out there for you. How about Cowboy vampires in love with firemen? Yep, we’ve got that covered. Anything and everything pretty much goes when it comes to erotica. So, let’s get to some of the more popular genre:
Cowboys never seem to go out of style. As a woman married to a Wyoming boy I can definitely seen the appeal of a hot stud in a pair of chaps (not that my man has ever worn chaps, but he has ridden herd on cows before). As a writer you can almost never fail if you stick to this tried and true genre. Some of my absolute favorites are:
Who hasn’t fantasized about more than one man making all your naughty bits sit up and beg? From the plethora of menage books on the market I’d say the answer to that is a lot of women. Twin fantasies, strict menage, and bi-sexual menage are all a part of this genre.
I’ve always been a huge sci-fi/fantasy reader and was super happy that this genre translates well into erotica. The skies the limit (literally in most cases) for these books. Once I find an author I like I usually buy everything they’ve written. Some authors write only one type of genre while most try their hand at different kinds.
As I’m sure EVERYONE knows by now (unless you live under a rock, in which case, you need to get out more), paranormal books are currently h.o.t. Vampires, shape shifters, Goddesses, Faeries, all of these constitute paranormal in my book. Stephenie Meyer and Charlaine Harris may have started the trend, but the erotica world has taken it to new heights of ecstasy! Now that paranormal has gone mainstream, so have many of the erotic authors. Instead of strictly seeing these books only via digital press we’re now seeing them on the shelves of major retailers, including Target and Barnes and Noble.
Who doesn’t love a man in uniform? Lord knows I sure do. There’s just something about all the brass and shine that makes me melt in very strategic places. I’m not alone as can be seen by the number of books and series featuring the various military branches of service, police and firemen, or former members of the military. These men (and women) serve and protect in some interesting ways.
And, finally, there are the tried and true contemporary romances. Sure, some of these might have a spanking (or two) or feature a relationship with more than two people, but they’re first and foremost concerned with the issues of modern life and love and all of the problems and issues that many of us face every day. Of course, there are also insanely hot guys and intensely hot sex too (which I hope all of you dear readers have every day).
So, my sweets, you need to start reading to tide you over until my book comes out. Let me know what you think. Are there any you loved? Hated? Would like to see more of? I breathlessly await your input.
